Liposuction has been used for decades – but advances in aesthetic technology have improved the results of this fat-removing process. Dr. Sonya Merriman is a respected, talented plastic surgeon who uses advanced fat removal techniques in performing liposuction for smoother, better results.
What is Tumescent Liposuction?
Dr. Merriman is known for her experience in achieving desirable results with liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is a significant change in how liposuction is performed. In this modern approach to fat removal, a liquid is injected into the areas to be treated. This liquid is made up of saline, adrenaline, and a numbing agent.
Each of these ingredients perform an important function. The adrenaline works to shrink blood vessels to reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising, the anesthetic makes the procedure more comfortable, and the saline swells the area to loosen fatty deposits for easier, more effective extraction.
Will Liposuction Work for Me?
Are you plagued by fatty areas on your body that just won’t go away, no matter how diligently you watch your diet, or how often you exercise? The human body is genetically programmed to store fat in certain areas. On women, the fatty zones linger on the tummy, love handles, buttocks, and thighs, and men frequently have fat deposits on the abdomen. A bulging tummy can be addressed with modern liposuction, producing a trimmer, firmer, more sculpted body.
Dr. Merriman performs liposuction on men and women who are unhappy with unsightly, unwanted fat on the following body areas:
- Tummy
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Back
- Neck
- Double chin

Liposuction for a Sculpted Body – At Last.
You do not have to live with excess fat that won’t respond to diet or exercise but can finally have the sculpted appearance that brings you confidence and joy. Rather than wearing loose-fitting clothing to try to hide the situation, you will be free to wear tighter, revealing clothing with confidence.
The Procedure: What to Expect
It is important that you, as a patient, know what to expect when undergoing the procedure. The first step is to mark the areas that will be treated. Anesthesia will be administered for your comfort, typically local with intravenous sedation. The anesthetic in the liquid injected in tumescent liposuction aids in greater numbing of the area. It is now injected, swelling the area. After injection, a thin, hollow needle, called a cannula, is inserted through a small incision, and the fat gently extracted. The length of your treatment will vary, based upon the number of areas you want trimmed and slimmed.
After Liposuction
Once your procedure is complete, you will wear a compression garment. This tight, elasticized garment holds the treated zone in place, and aids in healing.
You will need to return home to rest and recover. Plan for your recovery in advance, including arranging a friend or family member to drive you home and help you the first day, filling your prescriptions, and having everything you may want, such as food and drink, purchased and close at hand.
You will have some restrictions in your activities.
- Avoid alcohol
- Rest comfortably, preferably sitting in a recliner to aid in drainage
- Stay hydrated
- Wear your compression garment
- Take slow, gentle walks frequently to aid circulation
- Use Tylenol to manage pain
Most of our patients feel well enough to return to work in two or three days; you may want to plan your liposuction treatment at the end of the week, so you can return to work after the weekend. However, everyone heals at a slightly different speed and you may need an extra day or two.
You will be treated with professionalism and kindness.
